Ginetta Cars were awarded the ‘Small Business of the Year’ title at a recent presentation by the Motorsport Industry Association (MIA).
The prestigious MIA Business Awards recognise the UK Motorsport industry’s high achievers from the past year. Ginetta’s latest accolade was revealed in front of an audience of 500 representatives of the international motorsport community.
Ginetta’s Chairman Lawrence Tomlinson was there to receive the trophy presented by Alistair Fergusson of Alcon Components, who sponsored the award (left).
Industry peers from the MIA came to the decision and as CEO Chris Aylett explains, Ginetta’s recent brand resurgence made the Yorkshire-based sports car manufacturer a worthy winner.
"2008 was one of the most impressive first years for a race car and race series” said Aylett referring to the launch of the Ginetta G50 and its one-make Championship. “Their junior series was voted second to the BTCC in the Motorsport News listings - a stunning rebirth of a famous British sports car brand in its 50th year.
“Ginetta have had continuous success in Motorsport for 50 years but its recent injection of enthusiasm and good management has just electrified a great company in a part of the world that has always excelled in producing good race cars."
During 2008, the 50-strong staff launched the Ginetta G50 sports car, built over 70 variations of the model and successfully launched a G50 one-make Championship. This led to its acceptance onto the British Touring Car Championship support package along with its sister series – the Ginetta Junior Championship.
Two G50 Endurance cars proved longevity at the Britcar 24 hour race by making it to the end and in GT4, the G50 took the inaugural British GT4 crown. A G50 road prototype will lead to a road car launch in 2009 with an electric-powered varient.
Ginetta Juniors thrilled BTCC crowds and bosses enough to secure another two years on the prestigious package while the G20 Championship continued its success with regular grids of over 25 cars supporting British F3 / GT races.
“It was a genuine surprise to have won the award” admitted Managing Director Richard Dean. “Winning this is a great testament to the hard work everybody at the Company has put in over the last year. It’s a result of this hard work that we’re one of the few British success stories in the current financial climate.”
Ginetta also expanded into LMP racing in 2008 with investment in Zytek Engineering. The British engine and chassis manufacturer link-up also paved the way for the recent launch of the GT3-equivalent G50Z powered by Zytek.
